In Conversation with Sandra Chow, co-founder of ROOAR

Sandra and Theodora Chow founded ROOAR, an organic skincare company that focuses on sustainability, organic products, and wellbeing and I love what they are doing. Their shared passion for beauty and wellness spans over 15 years and ROOAR represents the culmination of their journey towards promoting self-care and mindfulness on a global scale.

I am delighted to have been able to get to know ROOAR a little better as they not only gave an amazing interview for YOMU but also sent me their beautiful Aromatic Body Hydrator which is pure bliss in a bottle. This is no ordinary body lotion as it intensely moisturises and repairs your skin while softening, soothing, and hydrating it. Given that my skin can be tricky, that’s no mean feat to achieve.

Packed in a stunning box, it comes brimming with skin-loving aloe vera and olive leaf extract which have natural soothing effects, vitamin E for its antioxidative power, as well as gotu kola extract which boosts collagen production. As someone who spends a lot of time outside, in the pool, and by the sea, this is an everyday treatment I can’t do without.

Having achieved success with a fantastic nail brand across three branches in Hong Kong, and an award-winning local skincare line, the company’s relocation to London two years ago provided the impetus to extend their vision to a wider audience and I can’t wait for you to know more about ROOAR from Sandra, and what this move had meant to them.

What inspired you to start a company in the health and wellness sector and what do you offer?  
ROOAR was born from the combined passion of sisters Sandra and Theodora for beauty and wellness, rooted in their belief in the transformative power of self-care and mindfulness. After 15 years in the beauty industry, they developed a deep conviction that true beauty extends beyond the surface, emphasizing internal health and self-care. This belief shaped their focus, leading to the success of their nail brand and local skincare line in Hong Kong. ROOAR is their first global body care line dedicated to promoting holistic wellness and expanding their vision on a global scale. ROOAR’s products are designed to nourish the body and nurture the soul, embodying their commitment to sustainability. They aim to inspire individuals to embrace their uniqueness and prioritize their well-being through a meticulously crafted range of body care products.

What influenced your services or product design?
Our product design is deeply influenced by our commitment to wellness and sustainability. We meticulously select premium natural and organic ingredients that not only provide exceptional skin benefits but also promote mental well-being. Ingredients like Gotu Kola and Lavender are chosen for their calming and therapeutic properties, ensuring our products offer a holistic self-care experience. Additionally, our dedication to sustainability guides our packaging choices and production methods, aligning with our belief in taking care of ourselves and the planet.

How does your company uniquely address the health and wellness needs of its customers? 
ROOAR uniquely addresses health and wellness by integrating high-quality body care with mental wellness benefits. Our products, such as the Aromatic Body Hydrator, combine powerful, natural ingredients that aid relaxation and stress relief. We encourage our users to deeply inhale the calming scents during application, creating a multi-sensory experience that nurtures both body and mind.

The rise of sustainability and eco-conscious consumerism has influenced our ingredient sourcing and packaging decisions. Could you describe a pivotal moment or decision in your company's development? How did it influence your path forward?
A pivotal moment for ROOAR was our decision to relocate to London and expand our vision globally. This move not only broadened our market reach but also exposed us to new trends and consumer needs, inspiring us to refine and innovate our product offerings. It reinforced our commitment to sustainability and holistic wellness, guiding our brand towards becoming a global advocate for mindful self-care.

How do you measure success in terms of health and wellness outcomes for your clients or customers? 
We measure success through customer feedback and satisfaction. Positive testimonials about improved skin health, enhanced relaxation, and overall well-being are key indicators. Additionally, we monitor the repeat purchase rate and customer engagement on social media, which reflect the trust and value our customers place in our products. Surveys and direct interactions also help us gauge the effectiveness of our products in meeting wellness outcomes.

What role does technology play in your business, especially in relation to enhancing health and wellness? 
Technology plays a significant role in our business by enabling us to develop and test high-quality formulations, ensuring efficacy and safety. We use advanced extraction and processing techniques to preserve the potency of our natural ingredients. Technology also aids in sustainable packaging solutions and helps us connect with our customers through digital platforms, offering personalized wellness tips and fostering a supportive community.

What are the biggest challenges you face in maintaining the integrity and efficacy of your wellness products/services in a rapidly growing industry?
One of the biggest challenges is sourcing high-quality, sustainable ingredients consistently. As the demand for natural products grows, maintaining our strict standards can be difficult. Another challenge is staying ahead of regulatory changes and ensuring compliance without compromising our product efficacy. Additionally, differentiating ourselves in a saturated market requires continuous innovation and authentic storytelling to convey the unique benefits of our products.

How do you stay informed and continue to innovate within the health and wellness field?
We stay informed by actively participating in industry conferences, engaging with wellness experts, and continuously researching emerging trends and scientific advancements. Collaboration with dermatologists and wellness practitioners helps us refine our formulations. We also listen to our customers, using their feedback to drive product innovation and ensure we meet their evolving needs.

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs looking to enter the health and wellness industry?
My advice would be to stay true to your vision and values. Authenticity resonates with consumers, so ensure your products and brand story reflect your genuine passion. Prioritize sustainability and consider the holistic well-being of your customers. Stay informed about industry trends and be adaptable to changes. Finally, build a supportive community around your brand and engage with your customers meaningfully—they are your greatest advocates.
