Instagram, the 2025 Edit

Show up, connect & grow on Instagram sounds easy, but given that the platform is ever evolving, because why keep things simple, right, it can be tricky to keep going. From updates to image formats to changes in how content is shown, it can feel like a lot to keep up with. But Instagram is still a valuable tool for sharing your content, building connections, and growing your brand.

If you use IG for business, work or play, our in-house social guru, Jules Brim is here today to spill the social beans so you can break through the noise and make some progress.

Over to you, Jules!

Rather than worrying about every algorithm tweak, think of these changes as a way to evolve your content to match how people search and interact. The key to success isn’t about chasing trends, it’s about making Instagram work for you. Whether you're a small business owner, creator, or just looking to get more eyes on your content, here’s how to optimise your profile and posts for maximum impact.

Know Who You’re Talking To

Before you even think about what to post, get clear on who you’re creating content for.

What are they struggling with?

What do they love?

What kind of content makes them stop scrolling?

The better you understand your audience, the easier it is to create content that connects.

Create Thumb-Stopping Content

Instagram is a fast-moving platform and content doesn’t tend to have a long lifespan, so your content needs to stand out. Use bold colours, eye-catching images, and interesting layouts to grab attention. Play with different styles, whether it's a beautifully shot product image, flatlays, a funny meme, or a behind-the-scenes snap, the most important thing is that it reflects you and your brand.

Tell a Story in Your Captions

People connect with stories, not just sales pitches. Instead of a generic “New product alert!” caption, tell a bit of the story behind it. Why did you create it? What problem does it solve? What’s the funny thing that happened when you were putting it together? You don’t need to write an essay, just enough to spark conversation. Plus captions are now keyword searchable so make sure they are keyword rich so that your content is as discoverable as possible.

Use Carousels to Keep People Engaged

Carousels (those multi-image posts you can swipe through) are a great way to share valuable content without overwhelming your audience. Think step-by-step guides, before-and-afters, testimonials, or even a mini storytelling series. Instagram's chief Adam Mosseri himself recommends using them to improve reach and engagement. If someone doesn't interact with a carousel post (swipe through, expand the caption, etc.), Instagram may show them the same post again, but with the second image in the sequence, giving it a second chance at engagement

Make Hashtags & Alt Text Work for You

Hashtags help you get discovered, so do a little research and use a mix of popular and niche ones relevant to your brand. And don’t skip alt text! Whilst it’s primary purpose is to make your content more accessible (which is super important); it also gives Instagram extra context about your post, which can help with visibility.

 Engage, Don’t Just Post

Instagram is a social platform so be social! Reply to comments, DM new followers, and engage with other accounts in your niche. And don’t just wait for people to come to you, start conversations through interactive stories (polls, Q&As, quizzes) and genuinely engage with your audience. If you are time poor you can let some automations do the heavy lifting on this.

Mix Up Your Content

Instagram loves variety. If you’ve been relying on just static posts, try mixing in reels, carousels, and stories. Some people love quick-hit videos, others prefer in-depth posts—so experiment to see what works best for your audience.

Use Clear Calls to Action (CTAs)

Want more comments, shares, or clicks? Don’t be afraid to ask for them. Encourage engagement with simple prompts like “Tell me your thoughts in the comments” or “Tag a friend who needs to see this.” The more people interact, the better your reach.

Keep an Eye on What’s Working

Check your Instagram Insights regularly to see what’s resonating with your audience. Are your reels getting more engagement than your posts? Are people swiping through your carousels or dropping off after slide two? Use that info to tweak your strategy and do more of what’s working. Set some time aside each month or quarter to review whats working best.

Instagram isn’t about chasing algorithms; it’s about connecting with your audience in a way that feels right for you. The most important thing is to show up consistently, share value, and build real relationships. Rather than stressing over every change, focus on what makes your brand unique and how you can engage with your community in a way that feels authentic. Stay present, stay consistent, and most importantly, have fun with it!
